How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost in Los Angeles?

What a patch, a ceiling repair and a full sheet replacement actually cost in LA - and the four things that move the price more than the size of the hole.

Most drywall calls in Los Angeles are not really about drywall. They are about a door handle that went through a wall, a leak that dried out and left a stain, a TV mount that pulled out of the board, or a crack over a doorway that opens a little wider every year. What you pay depends far less on the size of the hole than on what caused it and how much finish work it takes to make the repair disappear.

The three brackets most repairs fall into

Small patch work. A doorknob hole, a row of anchor holes, a hairline crack. This is a same-day visit: cut a clean opening, back it, patch, two or three thin coats of compound with drying time between them, sand, texture, prime. Our drywall work starts from $285, and most single-room patch jobs stay close to that.

Section replacement. A two-foot cut-out after a plumbing repair, a ceiling patch, or a run of damaged board behind a vanity. More material, more taping, and usually a second visit, because compound has to dry properly before it is sanded.

Full sheet or full room. Once whole sheets come off, the job stops being a repair and starts behaving like a small remodel: protection, demolition, disposal, hanging, three-coat finishing, and a full texture pass so the new work does not read as a rectangle on the wall.

Four things that move the price more than the hole does

Texture. A flat wall is easy. Orange peel, knockdown and older hand-applied textures are where the skill sits. Matching the surrounding texture is the difference between an invisible repair and a patch you notice every time you walk past it.

Ceilings. Everything overhead is slower, messier and harder to finish, so the same patch costs more on a ceiling than on a wall. If the ceiling is already damaged, it is usually the moment to look at ceiling repair and popcorn removal in one go rather than paying for setup twice.

Access. A patch inside a closet, behind a toilet or above a stairwell needs protection and setup before anyone touches the wall. That time is real and it is billed.

The cause. If the board failed because of water, the patch is the last step, not the first.

Cracks that keep coming back

Los Angeles gives homeowners two crack sources that get underestimated: seasonal movement and seismic settling. A crack above a door frame that reopens every year is almost never bad taping. Filling it again will not hold. The repair is to cut the crack out, re-tape it properly and feather the finish wide enough that movement is spread over a larger area. If the same crack has been patched three times, the patching is not the problem.

When drywall is the cheap part of the job

Brown or yellow rings, board that feels soft, a musty smell in a closet, crumbling at the base of a wall - all of it means the same thing. The drywall is a symptom. The order of operations is find the source, stop it, dry the cavity, then patch. Skipping to the patch buys a few months and the stain comes back through the new paint. That is water damage repair work, and it is worth separating from a cosmetic patch when you ask for a price.

How to get a number you can trust

For small work a photo is usually enough. Send a close shot of the damage, one wider shot of the room so the texture is visible, and a sentence about when it appeared and whether anything was ever wet. That is normally enough to quote a fixed price instead of an open hourly rate.

Be careful with quotes that price only the patch. Sanding, texture matching and priming are most of the labour on a drywall repair. A quote that leaves them out is not cheaper - it is incomplete, and the difference shows up on the invoice.
