Repair and welding of iron fence

Project scope

We repaired and welded a damaged iron fence, restoring it structurally instead of replacing the run. Our crew cut out the failed sections, welded in new material, and dressed the welds back before treating and coating the repair. Affected metal was taken back to sound material and primed appropriately before any topcoat.

How we approach iron fence repair

Wrought iron and tubular steel fencing usually fails in two places: at the welds, and at the base of the posts, where they meet concrete or soil and corrode from the outside in. We look at both before quoting.

• Tap and probe posts and rails to find metal that is thin under the paint.
• Protect nearby plants, stucco and paving from sparks and grinding dust.
• Cut back to solid steel and fit new sections that match the original profile.
• Weld, grind flush and check that pickets and rails line up with the existing run.
• Remove rust to bright metal around the repair, then prime with a rust-inhibiting product.
• Topcoat to match, sealing joints where water would otherwise sit.

What to know before a similar job

Repair is nearly always the less costly route compared with replacing a fence, and on older properties it preserves ironwork that would be expensive to reproduce. The exception is when most posts are rotted at the base; at that point we will tell you honestly that new sections make more sense.

Surface preparation determines how long a repair lasts. Coating over active rust only hides it for a season. After the work, keep sprinklers from soaking the fence daily and touch up chips before they spread. If the fence encloses a pool, gate latches and gaps have safety requirements, so mention that when you call. We also repair gates, railings, security bars and other structural metalwork.
