A floor-to-ceiling feature wall in dark-stained oak, installed in a lounge space in Venice (ZIP 90291) in December 2024. The wall alternates two panel types: smooth oak veneer with a strong natural grain, and panels cut on a CNC machine with a fine diagonal groove. Switching between the two gives the wall texture without bringing in a second material. A long horizontal window opening sits in the middle of the run, so the panels had to finish cleanly around it on all four sides.
On a wall like this the eye goes straight to the joints. Seams need to run plumb from floor to ceiling, the grain and groove pattern should read as one surface across each joint, and the edges around the window opening have to be tight, because any gap in a dark finish shows up as a bright line.
