How we approach garage shelving

Garage shelving is only as good as its fixings. Loaded racking that is not tied back to the wall can walk and tip, and in earthquake country that is not a theoretical concern.

Park the car, open its doors, and mark what space is truly free.
Note the overhead door tracks, opener, panel clearance and outlets that must stay reachable.
Choose shelving rated for what will be stored, with margin.
Assemble on the floor, check for square, then stand and level each bay.
Tie the uprights to studs with structural screws, or to masonry with suitable anchors.
Put the heaviest items on the lowest shelves when loading.

What to know before a similar job

Start by sorting what you own. Shelving sized for bins is different from shelving sized for paint cans, tires or tool cases, and knowing the mix lets us set shelf heights once. Keep working clearance in front of the electrical panel and the water heater; both need access.

Garage walls are often unfinished or have thin drywall over studs, which makes anchoring simple if the studs are found properly. Concrete block walls need a different anchor.
