Installation of a large statement chandelier in a residential entrance. Heavy light fittings need a rated ceiling box fixed to structure. A standard box is not designed to carry a fixture of this weight, and swapping the fitting without upgrading the box is one of the more dangerous shortcuts in home improvement. Our crew confirmed the support, upgraded the mounting where required, and installed the fixture to the manufacturer's load specification. The fitting was assembled, wired, levelled and set at the correct drop for the ceiling height and the space below it. On a double-height entrance the drop determines whether the piece reads as intentional or simply low. We install chandeliers, pendants, ceiling fans and recessed lighting, including access at height. Electrical work is carried out to code.

How we approach heavy light fixture installation

A heavy fixture needs a rated ceiling box fixed to structure. A standard box is not designed to carry this kind of weight, and swapping the fixture without upgrading the box is one of the more dangerous shortcuts in home improvement. Our usual sequence:

Get the fixture weight from the manufacturer and compare it with what the existing box is rated for.
Open up or access from the attic to add blocking or a fan-and-fixture rated brace between joists.
Set up safe access at height, whether that is a tall ladder or a scaffold tower.
Assemble the frame first, hang and wire it, then dress crystals or shades last.
Level the body, set the chain or rod length, and test on the dimmer it will live with.

What to know before a similar job

The drop is the design decision. In a double-height entry, the height of the fixture decides whether it looks intentional or simply low, and it must clear the door swing and anyone walking under it. Stand on the upper landing as well as at the front door when choosing.

Check that your dimmer suits the lamps in the new fixture, since a mismatch causes flicker and hum. Replacing a fixture at an existing location is routine; adding a new location or circuit is electrical work that may need a permit. All our electrical work is carried out to code. Ask about a lift or winch if future cleaning and lamp changes worry you.
