Project scope

This job was the assembly and secure installation of a large multi-level cat enclosure. Flat-pack pet furniture of this size is awkward to build: the panels are heavy, the supplied fixings are often marginal, and a tall unit left unanchored is a real hazard around children and animals.

Our crew assembled the structure square, reinforced the connections where the supplied hardware was not up to the task, and anchored the finished unit to the wall structure.

How we approach tall flat-pack assembly

Anything tall, narrow and climbed on gets treated as a tip-over risk from the start. The handyman crew at Fix Brothers builds these the way we would build a bookcase in a child's room.

• Sort and count parts before starting, so a missing bracket is found early and not halfway up.
• Assemble on a flat surface and square each level before tightening.
• Swap undersized screws or cam fittings for hardware that holds in the panel material.
• Locate studs and fix anti-tip brackets into framing, not into drywall anchors alone.
• Load-test platforms and ramps by hand before the pets get access.

What to know before a similar job

The quick version: decide where the unit will live before it is built, because a fully assembled enclosure may not fit through a doorway. Check the wall behind it for studs and keep it clear of heater vents and window cords.
