Preparation and repainting of a staircase, covering treads, risers, stringers and handrail. Stairs are the hardest painted surface in a house to get right, because they take direct foot traffic and because a staircase cannot simply be closed off for three days in an occupied home. Our crew prepared the surfaces properly, filled and sanded, primed, and used a coating suited to foot traffic rather than standard wall paint, which will wear through on the tread nosing within months. The work was staged so the stairs remained usable throughout, finishing alternate treads and allowing proper cure time before the remainder. We also check the stair itself while we are on it. Loose treads, squeaks and a wobbling handrail are safety issues and are far easier to correct while the stair is stripped back than afterwards.

How we approach painting a staircase

Stairs are the hardest painted surface in a house to get right. They take direct foot traffic, and in an occupied home they cannot simply be closed off for days.

Inspect the stair for loose treads, squeaks and handrail movement before any finish work.
Degrease and sand existing coatings so the new paint has something to grip.
Fill dents and gaps, caulk riser-to-stringer joints, and spot-prime bare wood.
Choose a floor or porch enamel for treads and a durable trim enamel for risers and rail.
Paint every other tread, mark the wet ones clearly, and swap once the first set has hardened.

What to know before a similar job

Plan around cure time, not just dry time. Paint can feel dry within hours yet stay soft enough to scuff for days, so socks only and no moving furniture at first. If the household includes small children, pets or anyone unsteady on their feet, tell us, and we will adjust the staging.

Glossy treads can be slippery. A satin floor enamel, a runner or a fine anti-slip additive are all options worth discussing. Loose treads and a wobbling handrail are safety issues, and they are far easier to fix while the stair is stripped back than afterward, so we check them on every stair job. Repainting needs no permit.
